A mill town, railroad town and independent borough
The Borough's official history traces settlement to the late 1600s and a sawmill by 1685. The community later became closely associated with James Buckelew, whose milling, railroad, stagecoach and agricultural enterprises shaped the town.
A sawmill was established in the area, beginning centuries of mill activity around Lake Manalapan.
James Buckelew purchased the local mill; the settlement became known as Buckelew's Mills.
Buckelew built an integrated school open to all children; the “James B.” school helped give the town its name.
Jamesburg became a completely independent borough after decades as part of Monroe Township.
Railroad Avenue & the downtown core
East and West Railroad avenues form the heart of Jamesburg's compact commercial district, where restaurants, coffee, personal services, specialty retail and professional offices sit within a few blocks of Borough landmarks. Downtown Jamesburg, a local nonprofit, supports beautification and community activity in the district.
Independent retailers and service businesses remain concentrated on Railroad Avenue, Gatzmer Avenue, Buckelew Avenue and nearby Forsgate Drive.
